Amsterdam originated as a small fishing village along the banks of river amstel. It then developed into a horseshoe shaped plan with four main canals running through it.There are a total of 165 canals and 1281 bridges. Thus some distinct features of amsterdam like its shape, bridges and waterbody has been inculcated in the design.The library has a horseshoe shaped plan with each block being connected through a bridge. The library has been bounded by bracings that runs throughout. Bracings have been provided for both aesthetic and structural purpose.A waterbody runs below these bridges and extends upto the bracings. Shear walls have been provided in each block to hold the huge glass facade. Huge glass facades have been provided in order to let in natural light.
